After bed risers and shower shoes, the most important purchase you’re going to make before heading off to college this fall is a vacuum. Now more than ever is the time to seriously research and pick the best vacuum for your college dorm room — it’ll be doing more work than you could ever imagine.

Not only are your living conditions going to be generally meh, but there are so many more little things that contribute to a messy and dusty room. Most importantly, your roommate. You truly can never know what their cleanliness threshold is and if they’re OK with sleeping in bed with their pile of dirty dishes. Ew.

Whether you’re looking to splurge on a high-tech cordless stick vacuum or just want a budget pick that can get the job done (without catching on fire, setting off the smoke alarm and making your entire dorm building evacuate), there are so many good options for every student.

Best Overall Pick: Shark® Navigator® Lift-Away® Upright Vacuum in Blue, $199.99

To make shopping for a vacuum a quick low-stakes breeze, we’ve outlined the best dorm vacuums that can fit in every small space and suck up every mess. Scroll below to find out why we’re obsessed with these nine vacuum cleaners.

$199.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond

If you’re looking for quality on a budget, this reliable, effective and super easy-to-use bagless upright vacuum cleaner is our top pick. The Shark Navigator works well on just about every floor type, whether you’re stuck in a dorm with classic linoleum tile or somehow scored pre-war hardwood. With zero bags to swap out and a washable filter, it’s super easy to maintain and will last way past graduation.

Most importantly, it can also pick up every type of mysterious debris. Don’t worry, we’ve been there and we’re not judging — it’s college.

The BISSELL Featherweight Stick Lightweight Bagless Vacuum is truly a three-way cleaning powerhouse that costs less than two Chipotle bowls. It’s also Amazon’s No. 1 selling stick vacuum, beating out all of the big guys, making it a no-brainer purchase.

While this vacuum isn’t cordless, its powerful suction makes up for it. Plus, it only weighs 3 lb total, so it’s easy to carry room to room. And cleanup is super easy since the Featherweight vacuum is bagless. All you have to do is empty the dirt cup to toss out debris.

Even though the hype is real, it’s no secret that Dyson vacuums cost a pretty penny. But, if you’re down to splurge for that signature Dyson spice, then this Dyson model might be your move. What makes the Dyson V15 Detect more worthy than other Dyson vacuums is that it has wildly clever features to make your busy college life so much easier.

There’s a sensor that continuously sizes and counts dust particles so as to automatically increase suction power when needed. Also, the LCD screen reports what it sucks up in real-time. However, the coolest part of the Dyson V15 Detect has to be the actual laser. Basically, the precisely angled laser makes invisible dust visible on hard floors, so you won’t miss a thing. And yet we still don’t have flying cars.

$54.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond

Not only is the eufy HomeVac H11 Pure Cordless Handheld Vacuum most likely the chicest handheld vacuum to ever grace a dorm room, but it also takes up minimal space without sacrificing any suction power.

If you’re looking for even more convenience, this handheld vacuum only needs a USB charger. Theoretically, you can charge it in your car, attached to your laptop while in the library or at any squished dorm party just for funsies.

With over 14,000 Amazon reviews, the Tineco A11 Hero Cordless Lightweight Stick Vacuum Cleaner is an excellent choice when it comes to sleek cordless stick vacuums. It’s also, like, really pretty.

From light dust to stubborn messes cleaning, the A11 Hero tackles them easily with three power modes. Suction Modes I and II are great for daily cleaning tasks, while Max Mode is for those less-than-thrilling messes. Meanwhile, LED headlights can illuminate scary dark corners (ahem, under your roommate’s bed), and four different attachments offer a versatile vacuuming experience.

$99.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond

First, how obsessed are you with the word “VACMOP”? More importantly, the lightweight and easy-to-store Shark VACMOP™ Pro combines powerful suction with spray mopping in one machine to keep your floors shiny for when parents’ weekend rolls around.

The LED headlights can help illuminate any hidden debris, and the magnetic battery charger makes the entire cleaning process a low-lift effort. You can vacuum up any dry dust and debris while absorbing any wet messes with the pad. Then, just toss the pad — there’s zero filters or maintenance necessary to keep this guy working properly.

A fan-favorite with Amazon shoppers and In The Know readers, this little handheld vacuum actually does “erase” any pet hair — whether or not you’re allowed to have pets in your dorm, or you’re hiding your fur baby from your RA.

You can read more about why we love the BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser right over here.

Not only is this model one of Amazon’s top-selling stick vacuums, but it’s also the best affordable alternative to higher-end models from brands like Dyson. With HEPA filtration and a flexible head for tight turns and corners, it’s easy to see why Amazon shoppers keep buying this model over and over.

OK, this is here mostly as a joke. But, also, why not? We’re sure you’ll find a use for it eventually.

U.S. chip manufacturer SkyWater Technology Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google Public Sector announced on Thursday they are expanding an open source platform to design chips that can be made in SkyWater’s Minnesota facility. SkyWater said the U.S. Department of Defense is funding $15 million for the development of the platform. “One of the reasons the U.S. government is investing in this initiative is because they can then take the output of a lot of this development,” said SkyWater CEO Thomas Sonderman.

A corporate minimum tax proposed this week in a congressional spending bill would not bring the United States into compliance with a separately negotiated 137-country deal for a global minimum tax. Although both taxes are the same rate - 15% - they are separate items that apply differently to companies. Maverick Senator Joe Manchin, who on Wednesday struck the legislative deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, his fellow Democrat, has not backed the global tax plan.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed sweeping legislation on Thursday to subsidize the domestic semiconductor industry as it competes with Chinese and other foreign manufacturers, a victory for President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats hoping to keep their slim majority in Congress in November midterm elections. Passage sends the bill to the White House, where Biden is expected to sign it into law as soon as early next week. The Senate passed the "Chips and Science" act with bipartisan support on Wednesday, after more than a year of effort.

OTTAWA (Reuters) -Canada on Thursday welcomed a deal reached by Democratic U.S. senators to back a bill that includes an expansion of tax credits for electric vehicles produced in North America that does not discriminate against those manufactured in Canada. A previous version of the bill presented by Democratic President Joe Biden's administration included tax credits that would have favored American-based manufacturers, sparking furious Canadian lobbying in Washington to get it changed. The bill had been blocked until late Wednesday, when Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and fellow Democratic Senator Joe Manchin reached agreement on a revamped version that instead foresees tax credits for "North American" electric vehicles, or EVs.

(Reuters) -Hershey Co said on Thursday it would fall short of meeting demand for the all-important Halloween and Christmas holiday seasons this year, blaming a scarcity of raw ingredients and difficulties in securing suppliers. Pandemic-induced global supply chain disruptions and the Russia-Ukraine war have crunched supplies of cocoa, edible oil and other food ingredients, pinching production lines of packaged food companies around the world. Hershey Chief Executive Officer Michele Buck said those issues, along with the company's focus on meeting demand during non-holiday periods, would lead to a likely shortage during Halloween, but added that sales will still top last year.

(Reuters) -Apple Inc on Thursday said parts shortages are easing and that demand for iPhones is unceasing despite consumers tightening other spending, helping it top Wall Street expectations and forecast faster sales growth ahead. Though macroeconomic indicators around the world are turning negative, Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told Reuters there had been no slowdown in demand for iPhones, the company's biggest source of revenue. Apple's loyal and relatively affluent customer base has enabled it to weather consumer spending dips better than other brands in the past, and the company's latest quarterly results suggest a similar pattern emerging.

MONTREAL — TFI International is reporting a major earnings boost in its latest quarter, with revenues up by nearly a third and adjusted profits rising more than three-quarters. Canada's largest trucking company says total revenue surged 32 per cent year over to $2.42 billion in the three months ended June 30 from $1.84 billion a year earlier. The Montreal-based outfit says adjusted net income increased 76 per cent to $241.1 million in its second quarter from $137.2 million in the same period las

China Evergrande Group will offer its offshore creditors asset packages that may include shares in two overseas-listed units as a sweetener, the developer said on Friday, as a stifling liquidity crisis in the property sector continues. The two listed units are Evergrande Property Services Group Ltd and electric vehicle maker China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group Ltd, the embattled developer said in an update on its preliminary restructuring proposal, a move that was widely expected by creditors. Evergrande's restructuring proposal, which was thin in details, comes as China's property sector, a key pillar for the world's second-largest economy, lurches from one crisis to another.

Nissan Motor Co on Thursday said it was "cautiously optimistic" after posting a 14% drop in quarterly operating profit as the semiconductor shortage gradually eases and COVID-19 lockdowns in Shanghai are lifted. Nissan has taken steps to secure inventory levels with suppliers in the short term and replace custom made semiconductors with general purpose chips over the medium-term, said Chief Operating Officer Ashanti Gupta, adding that the situation is "improving". All of Nissan's suppliers in China have restarted operations at full capacity, the executive added.

MILAN/PARIS (Reuters) -Stellantis beat first-half profit forecasts thanks to strong pricing and high-margin vehicle sales, but rising production as a chip shortage eases could hit the auto industry's ability to raise prices in 2023, its top executive warned on Thursday. The car industry has benefited from what chief executive Carlos Tavares called a "sweet spot" where a lack of core parts like semiconductor chips has hurt production, but high demand has allowed carmakers to charge more and raise profits despite high energy and raw material costs. If production rises "the pricing power of the industry will be somehow reduced... which means you may have pressure on the margins," Tavares told reporters.

LENORAH, Texas (AP) — To the naked eye, the Mako Compressor Station outside the dusty West Texas crossroads of Lenorah appears unremarkable, similar to tens of thousands of oil and gas operations scattered throughout the oil-rich Permian Basin. What’s not visible through the chain-link fence is the plume of invisible gas, primarily methane, billowing from the gleaming white storage tanks up into the cloudless blue sky. The Mako station, owned by a subsidiary of West Texas Gas Inc., was observed

Some of Britain's top listed companies could be downplaying risks from climate change on their bottom line and could face "appropriate action", regulators said on Friday. Companies listed on the London Stock Exchange's premium market have been required since 2021 to make climate-related disclosures to investors in line with the global Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) - or to explain why they have not.
