A man was accused of assaulting him with a wooden stick after meeting him through the dating app Grindr, and was charged with federal hate crimes.

The FBI arrested 22-year-old Daniel Andrew McGee on Monday and appeared in the U.S. District Court in Eugene for the first time in the afternoon. According to federal prosecutors, he was accused of targeting and assaulting the man because of his sexual orientation.

McGee was ordered to remain in detention and a detention hearing was held on Tuesday afternoon.

At around 11:30 am on July 5th, Eugene police received a report that someone screamed for help after being attacked. According to a federal complaint, the police found a man with a head injury that was life-threatening and took him to PeaceHealth Riverbend Hospital in an ambulance.

FBI agent Spencer Anderson wrote in the complaint that the man had multiple cuts on both sides of his head and the back of his head, and a large part of his scalp was missing.

The complaint stated that McGee was in the apartment, covered in blood. The complaint stated that McGee told the police that he met the man on the dating app and went to the stranger’s apartment, “because he knew the devil would be there,” and his nightmare told him that he needed to kill that person. .

According to FBI agents, McGee told police officers that he attacked the man with a tire thump and fists because he intended to "kill" him and "get rid of him," the complaint stated. The truck driver uses the tire impactor to check the tire pressure. It looks like a mini baseball bat.

Further investigation revealed that McGee used the nickname "st8 Curious" to contact the person on Grindr. The two exchanged messages on Snapchat in which McGee tried to confirm that they would be alone when they met, according to the complaint. The complaint stated that the victim later found a bag left by McGee in his apartment, which contained a kitchen knife, a folding knife, a bottle of Comet detergent, a portable vacuum cleaner and a large roll of garbage bags.

McGee's father told the police that his son had autism and he did not know that his son had left their home that night. The complaint stated that McGee's father told the police that he was worried about his son's mental health and that his son had been taking or discontinuing certain drugs.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and searched the son's cell phone and bedroom computer. FBI agents wrote in the complaint that McGee had previously downloaded videos of homosexuals being hurt and assaulted, and extensively searched the Internet for homosexuality and gay life, as well as how to escape murder and dispose of corpses.

The complaint stated that from October to July 5, 2020, McGee visited the "Gay Attack" and "Gay Agenda" pages on Conservapedia, a wiki-based English online website. The complaint alleges that he also ordered a tire impactor and a wig from Amazon in June.

U.S. District Judge Mustafa T. Kasubhai ordered McGee to be detained on Monday night because he poses a threat to the community and risks escape if released. He also pointed out the nature of the allegations, his possession of weapons, his alleged violent behavior and mental health problems.
