Washington, November 8, 2021/PRNewswire/ - The Home Appliance Manufacturers Association announced today that Joseph McGuire, long-time president and chief executive officer, will retire, waiting for the nation to find his successor. McGuire will remain at the helm of AHAM until at least May 2022.

Patricia Bassett, vice president of R&D for appliances and cookware at Newell Brands, and the current chairman of AHAM will lead the search committee responsible for finding the next CEO of AHAM. "Joe has always been committed to creating a responsible regulatory environment that allows our products to continue to improve family lives while protecting the planet," Bassett said.

McGuire was appointed President of AHAM in December 1998. Soon after, he directed the association to move its headquarters from Chicago to Washington, D.C., establishing a strong industry influence in the US capital. Subsequently, he oversaw the opening of the AHAM Canada office in Ottawa, Ontario in July 2012, setting the industry flag in the Canadian capital. In 2004, under the leadership of McGuire, AHAM successfully merged the Association of Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers into its operations.

John Taylor, senior vice president of public affairs and communications at LG Electronics America and former chairman of AHAM, said: "Joe has created a legacy of accomplishments in many ways, but most importantly, he has cultivated an employee who is known and respected for their work. During McGuire's tenure, AHAM established an influential and pragmatic voice for home appliance manufacturers in the capital, and signed numerous legislative and regulatory agreements with environmental, consumer and other external stakeholder groups. AHAM's advocacy prompted Congress to pass the Barton-Domenici Energy Policy Act of 2005, which established the first manufacturer's tax credit for the production of ultra-efficient appliances in history. McGuire called on Congress in 2009 to develop a financial rescue plan, which led to the formulation of the 2009 State Energy-Saving Appliance Rebate Program, which is a $300 million consumer appliance rebate program to help stimulate the economy.

AHAM has also built a bridge internationally. Together with its European counterparts, it has established the International Roundtable of Home Appliance Manufacturers Association. The member associations come from Austria, Canada, China, Europe, Russia, South Korea, South Africa and the United States.

McGuire is considered a leader of the association community. He served as the chairman of the American Association of Executives (ASAE) from 2012 to 2013, and was recognized by CEO Update in 2011 as the CEO of the top association. He serves as a director of the American National Association of Standards, and serves on the board of the National Association of Manufacturers, and serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Manufacturers.
