Before 1908, the vacuum cleaner used to clean houses was a bulky gas turbine with wheels.

This is a miracle of London. The hose passes through the window like tentacles, sucking crumbs for the upper crust.

The mechanical sweeper owned by ordinary people can only stir up dust at best, as asthma sufferers and Guangzhou department store janitor James Murray Spangler knows.

In order to relieve the persistent cough, the 60-year-old man assembled a broomstick, soap dish, pillowcase and fan motor. This device is the first upright portable electric vacuum cleaner, under the leadership of William H. Hoover (William H. Hoover) will become a multi-million dollar business.

Spangler is no ordinary guardian; he modified a grain harvester and designed a bicycle when he was about 40 years old. But his vacuum cleaner is revolutionary.

Spangler quit his job and founded Electric Suction Sweeper Co., but sold the patent to Hoover in 1908 to help solve financial problems. Hoover appointed Spangler as the head of operations and renamed it the Hoover Company in 1922.

Why it matters: The Spangler design is the beginning of a portable vacuum cleaner and the end of countless hours of dusting the carpet with a dustpan.
