Professional tool reviews for professionals

We spent a lot of time testing workshop vacuum cleaners and dust collectors. Mainly used to control dust with your tools, they are great. But what about the actual storage and cleaning? This is where the Makita wireless cleaning system plays a greater role. Today, we take a closer look at the Makita XCV17 cordless HEPA backpack vacuum cleaner.

If you want, you can use Makita XCV17 with your tool, but we find the roller dust collector more convenient. However, this is a convenient option for the final cleanup of the occupied space.

Makita considers the design of their vacuum cleaner very well. First, it stands up on its own. Whether you store it on the floor, on the counter or on a shelf, it is very good and stable.

Moving up from the bottom of the frame, there is a battery storage bay on each side. Due to placement and access, we found it simple to replace the battery without turning off the vacuum.

Makita XCV17 has a HEPA rating and includes a filter cleaning mechanism. When wearing it, stretch your hand to just above the battery on the left and hit the paddle several times to remove it.

At the top, the bag can be accessed by simply releasing the latch. The bag can hold up to 1.6 gallons of crumbs and can be easily replaced. The edge of the cardboard slides into the notch on the back and fits over the opening.

The hose is installed on the top, you can easily hold the right or left according to your preference.

The straps are designed in a trekking backpack style, and the shoulder straps and hips are padded. We found that everyone in the test team can make a lot of adjustments, including a few very slim people.

There is a strap on the top of the strap. We definitely prefer to wear a backpack vacuum cleaner to move from one place to another, but it can be helpful when you want to store it on a higher shelf.

The 2 small metal D-rings provide you with a place to place the controller and hanging extensions, so that your hands can be completely free when you are not operating the vacuum cleaner. There is even an elastic band on the waistband to hold additional nozzles when not in use.

Whether you buy a bare tool or a kit, Makita includes hoses, telescopic extensions, floor nozzles and crevice nozzles.

The hose is quite flexible and in our opinion has enough reach.

There are several reasons why telescopic extensions are worth noting. First, it is metal, which is much more durable than plastic. It also has a legitimate influence in the fully extended position. We are able to reach a 12-foot ceiling fully unfolded, while a ceiling of 8 to 10 feet is a piece of cake.

Overall, the design is very good and I have no complaints. The entire device weighs only 15 pounds, is equipped with a pair of 5.0Ah batteries, and the safety belt makes it easy to bear.

You can operate the Makita XCV17 cordless HEPA backpack vacuum cleaner via wired control. It has a clip on the back and you can fasten it to one of the D-rings, belt or pocket.

The top button turns off the vacuum, and the middle button cycles between low, medium, and high power levels. When you close and reopen the vac, it will remember the settings you used last time.

The third button activates the LED light on the remote control. It is not bright enough to clean, but when you walk into a dark room, it will help you find the light switch.

Makita rated this backpack vacuum cleaner as 78 CFM and 44 inches of water lift. In practice, we found that it is very effective on hard surfaces and works well on short carpets at high power.

Our only complaint about the carpet is that the vacuum cleaner does need a stirring brush nozzle to help loosen some debris trapped by the fibers.

Having this ability will make it an excellent standalone unit. However, please keep in mind that it is part of a solution-based product line. The place where Makita XCV17 found its limit was where the CXV19 vertical vacuum cleaner took over.

Makita tells us that this backpack produces a low vacuum of 60 decibels (A-weighted) and a high of 67 decibels. However, we actually measured lower. When measuring from my ears while wearing a vacuum cleaner, we measured a high power of 64 decibels, a medium power of 62, and a low power of 57.

In any case, this is a quiet vacuum! Even when using high power to clean up our office, we can talk to each other at a normal conversation level.

Makita equipped XCV17 with two 6.0Ah batteries. Using these, you can expect the runtime to be approximately 40 minutes at the high end and nearly 140 minutes at the low end.

Our Makita cordless tools mainly use 5.0Ah batteries, so this is the battery we tested. Using these, the high net time is slightly less than 32 minutes, and the low net time is close to 110 minutes.

As a bare metal, you can purchase Makita Cordless HEPA Backpack Vacuum for $599. If you want a kit with a pair of 6.0Ah batteries and a dual-port fast best charger, you need $919.

Makita's cordless HEPA backpack vacuum cleaner is suitable for hard surfaces and short carpets. It has a comfortable strap design that helps reduce fatigue and ultra-quiet operation. Use it with the XCV19 vertical vacuum cleaner to obtain the best overall effect in offices, hotels and other commercial clean environments.

If you want, you can use Makita XCV17 with your tool, but we find the roller dust collector more convenient. However, this is a convenient option for the final cleanup of the occupied space.
