The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has some pretty big shoes to fill as a video game adaptation, as it’s based on one of the most popular horror franchises of all time. The game doesn’t have an exact release date just yet, but we did recently get some behind-the-scenes footage of the game’s motion capture elements. Mysterio Mocap Suit

The 13-minute video, which was filmed back in July 2021, showcases the actors warming up and performing some cutscenes in their mocap suits. Mocap does look a little silly without context, but the final scenes will likely be a whole lot more horrifying.

Motion capture and its more complex counterpart, performance capture, have been popular forms of animating 3D models for many years now. They’re staples in many AAA titles, with some games such as God of War Ragnarok taking the technology to new heights. For a game like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, motion capture sets an important foundation, at least according to Ronnie Hobs, Creative Director at Gun Interactive.

“On Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the film, there’s a lot of terror, there’s a lot of uncomfortableness in the way characters moved, in the way they felt. So if you try to translate that to a video game, really, the motion capture is where it starts.”

We also learned a bit more about Johnny, a new character in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre universe. Johny’s mocap performance actor Dove Meir describes him this way:

“He’s the guy you’ll meet at the bar in town, that’ll talk to the ladies, get ’em feel very comfortable, and then bring ’em down to the house. And then he turns into a not-so-nice guy when the bad man takes over.”

A bit of gameplay footage is also sprinkled throughout the video, including a scene where the player appears to cut a door down with a chainsaw.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is set to launch sometime in 2023, and it’ll be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. You can wishlist the game on Steam here.
